Needle is Hal Clement's first novel first published in the May and June issues of the pulp magazine Astounding Science Fiction. The book is wonderful example of a 's science fiction 'juvenile' in the best tradition of Robert Heinlein. It was a fun read and I could easily go into kid mode and identify with 15 year old Bob and his adventures with an alien who crashed on earth/5.

Needle (Needle, #1) Published May by Avon Books. Mass Market Paperback, pages. Author (s): Hal Clement. ISBN: (ISBN ) Edition language: English. Needle is quite good, possibly the first successful SF detective story. John W. Campbell said it couldn't be done, and that irritated Hal Clement enough that he wrote Needle to prove Campbell wrong. Although the premise is a bit goofy, the story is very satisfying. I recommend it to all. Hal Clement can certainly spin a thumping good yarn! At the same time, Mr. Clement is as hard sf as they come. (Meaning that he tries to be as accurate with the science as he can and still tell a good story.) Through the Eye of a Needle is the sequel to Needle. Bob and Hunter have been together in a symbiotic relationship for some years now.

Hal Clement, whose real name was Harry Clement Stubbs (), often told of how he wrote Needle as the result of a dare. John W. Campbell, Jr., the editor of Astounding Science Fiction, the most prestigious s-f magazine in the s, was given to making lofty pronouncements that were understood by his writers to be dares to disprove them. Through the Eye of a Needle by Hal Clement (Italian edition) The novel “Through the Eye of a Needle” by Hal Clement was published for the first time in It’s the sequel of “ Needle “. The Hunter remained on Earth due to the impossibility of getting in touch with his people, who are knows how many light years away. "Needle" is a very unique science fiction story by Hal Clement. The story is well written at an adolescent level. As a parent I would not hesitate to allow my adolescent children to listen to this audiobook. The principal human protagonist is an adolescent male, and I think this may be somewhat more of a "male read".
