It's no standalone, though. The plot Free shipping over $ Greg Bear's book are just fantastic. Whilst 'Darwin's Chidren' doesn't quite have the shock value of 'Darwin's Radio' it is still an excellent read if you like really inhabiting possible futures (though this one is more probable than many might think).
